Each person is a puzzle to the other, and it is not always easy to find the pieces. Often the puzzle pieces that are needed to understand someone are in the past. This song is about how everyone makes more sense once you know the story of their past. When people don’t make sense, seem weird or strange, it’s often because we don’t know what’s happened to them; what forces shaped them, what environments they grew up in. The choices that they make today are related to their story, and the choices they have made along the way.

Comic books put a lot of effort into the notion of the backstory, for both heroes and villains. Real life may be more complex, but it is still true that we all have a backstory. It is also true that if we take the time to learn this story, we can be more empathetic towards those we don’t understand or agree with.
